AFRICA : IMPLEMENTATION OF COOP ACADEMY PROGRAMME IN COCOA SECTION IN CAMEROUN AND COTE D’IVOIRE

CONTEXT

Most of the world’s cocoa is grown on small familly farms.

Over times farmers cooperatives are developed in countries like Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon to help these farmers generate livelihoods for their families and their communities.

Cooperatives are to day essential vectors of rural development in cocoa grown regions of west Africa and central Africa.

COOP ACADEMY PROGRAMME

Initiated in 2013 in partnership with the International Finance Corporation and relying on strong local relationships the Coop  Academy enables leaders of cooperatives in Côte d’Ivoire and cameroon to acquire advanced skills in management  to improve the day to day operations of their organizations.

That programme combines intensive classroom training with a year of personalized coaching in the field.

In 2019 Cargill and the IFC (Internationl Found Cooperation) launched Coop Academy to add new areas to the initial programme based on business management.

The coop Academy is now imparted on training future leaders ready on topics such as :

  • Training and coaching : use of coaches to implement necessary changes in cooperative management, business planning, leadership and human resources etc….
  • Digital financial services : sensitization on the use of mobile banking services in rural areas.
  • Sustainability : developments of good agricultural practices
  • Regulation : training in the development of regulatory measures to enable cooperative to be competitive
  • Gender equality : training on gender issues

REPORT

In Côte d’ivoire this initiative was implemented in partenrship with Techno Serve, a non profit organization that develops solutions to help people avoid poverty, the INPHB, one of the most important universities in Côte d’Ivoire, the initiative for sustainable trade (IDH) and empow’her.

Through the Coop Academy, cooperatives see clear benefits through better prepared leaders to be evaluated in a changing cocoa sector.
