TANZANIA : GOVERNMENT INSTALLS AN AVOCADO PROCESSING UNIT OF 1.3 MILLION DOLLAR AT IRINGA

During the last decade there has been a considerable increase in national avocado production. The country the rank of which is among the best avocadoes exporters in Africa is also thinking about how to process so as to take advantage of international markets opportunities advent.

For that purpose the government plans to install an avocado processing unit of 3 billions shilling (1.3 millions $).

The project lies in the framework of a public-private partnership. It will allow the private sector to exploit the plan in term.

The new plant will have a processing capacity of 3,600 tons of fruits per year and generates 23 billion shilling (10 million $) exportation income per year according to the authorities’ estimates.

More broadly, the initiative’s objective is to reinforce the capacity processing income of the fruit in the country in order to decrease post-harvet loss of the sector.

In addition the initiative comes in a context of goverment’s ambition to generate 45 million $ of revenue thanks to the exportation of the fruits in the coming year 2023.

With an export of more than 11,000 tons of avocadoes TANZANIA is the 4th african fruit exporter, behind Kenya, South Africa and Morocco.

The main avocado production locations in Kenya are NJombe, Morogora , Arusha,Kilimanj aro and lringa.
